If you have been blogging for a while or even if you’re new to blogging, you may have heard that growing your email list is paramount.
Advice like “Focus on growing your email list!”, “The money is in the list”, “Building your email list should be your number one priority” is everywhere.
And for good reason!
An email list will always be the most valuable asset to your blog.
An email list lets you connect with your target audience, build brand awareness, and maximize your income through affiliate marketing and product launches.
Through an email list, you have a direct channel to the people who are the most engaged with your content and who have already shown they trust you and want to hear more from you!
Most importantly, having an email list will allow you to remain in contact with your readers no matter what happens to your blog or any social media platforms you use to drive traffic to your blog.
Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram or even Pinterest, may change their algorithm any time or even decide to delete your content or shut down your account without warning.
If you only rely on external platforms to connect with your audience, you could suddenly lose everything.
On the contrary, if you build your email list, you’re pretty much safe because no one can take it away from you.

Don’t make this rookie mistake
Although growing your email list is so important, many new bloggers don’t put much effort into it.
They may think they don’t need one “as yet”, they keep focusing on other stuff and postponing starting one, they might not know how to start one or what to do with the few subscribers they already have.
And in doing so, they miss out on the most powerful tool you may ever have as a blogger.

And just to be clear, I’m not judging here. This is actually a very regrettable mistake I’ve made myself.
In my first few months of blogging, I completed neglected this area and 5 months in, I only had an email list of slightly over 300 subscribers.
And the worst part was, I would email my subscribers rarely and inconsistently (and that’s an understatement!).
So, do yourself a favour, do not make the same mistake.

When I finally got serious about building mine, the rate of my daily subscribers has increased tremendously.
So here I am sharing the strategies that I used to grow my email list quickly so that you can do the same.
9 proven and easy tips to grow your email list exponentially
Create something valuable to offer for free to your readers in exchange for their email address. This is usually called freebie, opt-in, lead magnet, incentive, or ethical bribe.
A freebie can come in the form of
- cheat sheets
- or anything else that can be valuable to your audience.
Getting something in return will definitely encourage your readers to subscribe to your newsletter.
2. Digital library
You could create a password-protected area on your blog where you offer different free resources, and give your subscribers free access to your digital library by providing them with the password once they join your email list.
3. Subscribe/sign-up forms
Add a subscribe form on the home page and to every page of your blog, in the sidebar, at the bottom of a post, in the header and/or in the footer.
Link it to the “Sign up” button on your Facebook page, add it to a pinned post on your Facebook page, your Twitter account, your bio on Instagram, Quora, your email signature, in your signature on forums, and so on.
Basically, take advantage of any piece of real estate you’re able to use and place a banner about/a link to your freebie and subscribe form.
4. Content upgrades
When relevant, add a subscribe form within a post offering a freebie related to the topic and content of your post. You can place the subscribe form within your post or at the bottom of the post. This is usually called a content upgrade.
5. Pop-up forms
I’m not a big fan of pop-ups, I personally think they negatively affect the user experience.
But they convert very well so you may want to add one.
If you add one, make sure it doesn’t cover the whole page on a mobile device or you may get penalized by Google.
Also, make sure that it can be easily closed and doesn’t pop up as soon as someone lands on your website.
It can be annoying to be prompted to join an email list before even having a chance to see what a website is all about. Even worse if the pop-up cover most of the content and is not easy to close.
I think the best, less intrusive and arguably more likely to convert pop-ups are the exit pop-ups.
Exit pop-ups are pop-up forms that only show up when a visitor is about to leave your website by closing the tab or hitting the return button.
I might consider adding an exit pop-up myself in the future due to the higher conversion rate of pop-up forms over static forms.
6. Call to action
Make the subscribe button stand out by making it in a different colour from your blog colour palette and branding.
Change the wording on your subscribe button from the default “Subscribe” or “Submit” to something more compelling such as “Heck, yes!”, “Yes, please!”, “Give it to me!”, “Count me in!”, “I want in!”.
7. Target audience
Target the right audience and build an email list that is organized and segmented.
Numbers don’t matter when your subscribers are not really interested in your content.
In order to have a list of truly engaged subscribers:
- Don’t offer fantastic incentives for subscribing. Although this may seem like a great idea, you will end up getting subscribers who are only interested in the reward
- Do not participate in Facebook group threads with mandatory reciprocation to subscribe
- Don’t ever purchase bulk email lists!
8. Landing pages
Consider building up a landing page for your freebie, and promote and share it on social media.
A landing page, also known as a lead page or squeeze page, is a page that has a clear focus.
It only includes the description of your product (in this case, your freebie) and a clear call to action (in this case, joining your email list to get the freebie).
No other distractions, no navigation menu, no comment box, no sidebar, no related posts, no external or internal links, share buttons optional.
You can create a landing page with a plugin or with Mailerlite.
Mailerlite is FREE up to 1000 subscribers. Unlike other free plans offered by other email providers like MailChimp, Mailerlite free plan comes with all the features of the paid plan, including the possibility to create landing pages.

9. Pin it!
Create a pin for your freebie and direct Pinterest users to your landing page where they will be able to download your freebie by joining your email list.
Use eye-catching graphics that attract attention.

These easy strategies all work very well and have proven to be very effective.
Since I started implementing them on my blog, the number of my subscribers has increased considerably.
However, they require a lot of work and effort.
The process of creating opt-in forms, freebies, content upgrades for most posts, landing pages, and attractive pins is time-consuming and quite demanding.

People love free stuff, and again, they like to compete.
If you pick a valuable and significant prize, you’re on the way to get hundreds of subscribers in no time.
However, don’t make the mistake of picking a generic prize that would appeal to the masses like an i-phone or a VISA gift card.
Remember, the aim is to build an email list of subscribers who are genuinely engaged with your content. Quality over quantity is definitely the way to go here.
If you pick a prize valuable to your audience, a giveaway may work wonders to build an email list of target subscribers.
