You started a blog and you want to make money from it.
While there are multiple ways of monetisation, in my view, the best way to do so is by creating your own digital course and in this post, we will see why.
However, before we start, it’s important to understand that there is a big difference in how to start a blog as a hobby and how to start one with the goal of earning money from it.
Take Lucrezia’s free Blogging for New Bloggers Fast Track course to learn the best way to set your blog up for success.
For example, it is paramount that you go self-hosted if you want to make money blogging.
If your blog is ready for monetisation my advice is to create your own online course right now!
The following are the reasons that make an online course the best product for your blog.
Table of Contents
You Are An Expert
Everyone has unique expertise and valuable knowledge that they can share with the world. Yes, even a new blogger.
If you have a blog about a specific topic, chances are that you are an expert on that topic.
If you have a marketable skill of any kind, you can easily create an online course that will make you money.
Whether you are experienced in graphic design, marketing, blogging, or you know a lot about specific hobbies like crafts, woodworking or even knitting, there’s an audience waiting to purchase your course!
While you already know that you are an expert in that field, creating a course will position yourself as a thought leader and authority in your market.
Creating an online course is the right way to pack what you already know and use it to help other people attain great results.
Online Courses Are Hot Right Now
Yes, online courses are huge right now. According to Industry Forecasts, by the year 2025, online learning will be a $331 billion industry!
Think about how many online courses or guides you’ve personally used over the last year.
Perhaps you were stuck trying to figure out how to use a certain software program, and you found yourself surfing the web in search of resources from experts who taught you the best ways to master it quickly and efficiently. Or you wanted to learn a new skill or pick up a new hobby: you can find an online course about anything!
The need for instruction and the fact that online courses are easily accessible have created an amazing opportunity for anyone who is interested in generating a steady income online.
And don’t worry about whether people would be willing to pay for your knowledge or not, you’d be surprised at just how many courses are generating thousands of dollars a month in any niche.
Teachable alone has 30,000 course-creators who’ve collectively generated over $200 million in sales.
And these successful courses span every topic, including:
- Watercolour painting
- Drone flying
- Hand lettering
- Tennis coaching
- Dog training
- Guitar playing
- Traveling Europe
Online courses are scalable
Actually, courses have always been the go-to for everyone that needs to learn something.
However, with the “traditional” way to teach in person, you basically get paid for the hours that you work.
While the beauty of online courses is that once you create it, you’re done.
You don’t need to trade your time for money, your students can go through your course by themselves.
It becomes a completely passive income. Of course, you still need to promote your course and be ready to answer potential questions from your students, but apart from this, if you use a platform like Teachable, everything is automated.
Consequently, online courses are scalable. In fact, if you don’t need to be constantly there while your students are learning, there is no ceiling to the number of people that can enroll in your course simultaneously.
You can maximise the monetisation through affiliate links.
In fact, even if you decide to create a free course you can still make money from it.
I’m making a good income from my FREE course Pinterest for New Bloggers through affiliate links.
This is because, while I show my students how to start with Pinterest the right way, I also show them how to use some tools that helped me grow my Pinterest marketing.
I think it’s fair to use affiliate links because it’s at no cost to my students.
But if they end up switching to the providers that I use because of my endorsement in my course, I think it’s only fair that the provider should pay for my endorsement and referral (at no extra cost for my students).
Actually, a course is one of the best ways to promote your affiliate links as you are actually teaching your students why they need a given tool. Just remember to always disclose your affiliate relationship and affiliate links.
You can also use your course to promote your own product and services.

You Will Earn Money on Auto-pilot
As I already said, once you create your course you only need to promote it.
In my view, this is already a fairly passive way of earning money but there is more!
You can create your own affiliate program for your course so that people who loved it and found it valuable would recommend it to family and friends.
For example, we have launched our affiliate program (check it out here) to reward people that were recommending our products.
This helps us promote our products enormously and also helps our students make some money on the side 🙂
And if you use a premium platform to host your courses, such as Teachable, it will track everything for you and send the right amount to your affiliates.
They are better than eBooks
An alternative to creating online courses is writing eBooks on specific topics.
However, I suggest creating an eBook only as a way of validating your idea for an online course.
In other words, I would create an eBook, instead of an online course, only if you need to test if a topic would resonate with your audience.
I believe that online courses are better than eBooks for the following reasons:
Through an online course, you can go more in-depth in your expertise as they are usually more well-rounded than eBooks.
Online courses are premium products, consequently, you can give them a premium price.
In an online course, you are able to integrate your lessons with more resources such as videos or quizzes.
An online course doesn’t require all the formatting that an eBook does.
You can keep track of your students’ progress.
You can update your course every time it’s needed and all your students can check out the news. While with an eBook once someone downloads their copy you can no longer modify it.Learn why online courses are a better product than eBooks!Click To Tweet
They Are Easy to Create
If you decide to create an online course about a given topic this means that you are an expert about that topic.
Of course, creating the course requires hard work and dedication but you already know the ins and outs of your course topic!
Once you have your content ready, creating the actual course is super easy if you use a premium platform.
We’ve chosen Teachable as most of its functionality is intuitive, making a good looking course is seamless and the upload of material such as videos, photos, etc. is really easy.
Creating sales pages or integrating discount coupons is a smooth process. It takes care of the payment aspect and any possible refund. And, as I’ve already said, if you have an affiliate program, it tracks everything for you and sends the right amount to your affiliate.
A bonus point is that Teachable has lots of resources to help you create and market your course. For example, they’re currently hosting a FREE on-demand Masterclass that I really recommend you attend if you are planning to create your online course now or later on. This Masterclass will definitely put you on the right track to create your course.
And if you are ready to create your own course, this is the best time to do it as Teachable is running a Creator Challenge!
The Creator Challenge is an exciting, 3-month long event hosted by Teachable from June through August — and it’s specifically designed for course creators.
During those three months, you’ll build your course alongside a community of thousands of other new course creators like you.
You’ll learn from guest business mentors like Pat Flynn, Melyssa Griffin, Nicole Walters and more. And as you hit milestones — like publishing your first course and enrolling your first student — you’ll earn fun rewards, including Teachable swags, valuable software tools, coaching, and more!
And the best thing is that you don’t have to pay to enroll in the challenge!
So, even if you weren’t thinking about creating your course right now, my advice is to put everything else aside and take this opportunity to create your course with the support from a like-minded community and tons of professional input.
And honestly, I think you should start the challenge even if you’ve already launched your own course. I will be joining the challenge even if I’ve already created a couple of courses because there is always something new to learn and because it will be so much fun!
Hope to see you there!
